Trace impurities generally refer to secondary substances in products. It may be brought in by the raw materials themselves, formed during the production process, reacted between the components of the product or between the components and the packaging material during normal storage, or precipitated from the packaging material. Trace impurities are usually present in products at very low levels (trace amounts), such as a few milligrams or less per kilogram of consumer goods.

Some trace impurities commonly found in consumer goods are widely present in nature, including in drinking water, soil, air, and even food. Therefore, in one or several stages of the collection and transportation of raw materials for sanitary napkins, production, manufacturing, and packaging storage of finished products, they may all be mixed into the products.

The presence of trace impurities does not mean that sanitary napkins are unsafe. When sanitary napkins contain trace impurities, multiple factors should be considered to determine whether the product poses a safety risk. These factors includes: the nature of the trace substance (i.e. the harmful nature and degree of the substance), its content in the product, the amount and route of consumer use of the product (such as oral ingestion, inhalation, direct or indirect skin contact, etc.), the frequency of contact or use of the product (such as several times a day or only once a few months), etc. These factors are closely related to the final safety evaluation results.

When the trace impurities in the product are within the safe limit range, the product is safe. GB/T8939-2018 "Sanitary Napkins (Pads)" and other standards have clear requirements for the content of common trace impurities in sanitary napkins. When used under normal and reasonable conditions, the product will not cause harm to human health.
